Smartphones to consider under Rs 10,000

Smartphone under Rs 10,000
Diwali tech-shopping: Top 5 smartphones to consider under Rs 10,000

In the past couple of months, the budget Indian smartphone market has become really interesting, especially the sub-Rs 10,000 category. Breaking the usual stereotypes of low spec and bad build quality, the sub-Rs 10,000 smartphone market now has much more to offer, owing to the likes of Moto clan and new Chinese entrants like Xiaomi. With the Indian festive season just a week away, if you are looking to own or gift a sub-Rs 10,000 smartphone, then here are the top 5 smartphones you should look forward to.
Moto E – Rs 6,999
The best pick under Rs 10,000

The best pick under Rs 10,000
Motorola took the sub 10k market in India by storm by launching the Moto E at a crazy price of under Rs 7,000. Apart from being a handset from a reputed OEM, with extensive after sales support, you don’t feel short-changed when it comes to the features and performance. If you’re going to diss the Moto E because of its sub-par camera and the fact that it doesn’t have a front-facing one, then you’re missing the point.
We’ve had great fun reviewing the Moto E, which is saying a lot considering it’s a no-frills smartphone. If we have to nit-pick, then we would say that the buttons couldn’t have used slightly better tactile feedback and perhaps a 3MP auto-focus camera would have been better than the 5MP fixed-focus. If you are a first time smartphone user or wish to introduce someone to the world of Android, then the Moto E makes a great choice under Rs 10,000.

Xiaomi Redmi 1s – Rs 5,999
High-end specs at an economical price tag
High-end specs at an economical price tag

The Redmi 1S is Xiaomi’s second blockbuster smartphone, following the higher-end Mi 3. Just like the Mi 3, it comes with high-end specs at an economical price tag of Rs 5,999. The Redmi 1S sports a 4.7-inch 720p IPS display. It comes with 16GB of onboard storage and a microSD card slot that further expands it up to 64GB. It is fuelled by a 2000mAh battery and runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with Xiaomi’s MIUI layer on top. There’s an 8MP rear shooter and a 1.6MP front camera.
There’s little doubt that Xiaomi has another winner on its hands, but it needs some polishing on the performance, may be some fixes for the Indian firmware. Sluggish UI is not the best way to make an entry into the market, and the phone has enough firepower to actually utilise it better. In fact, with a dual-core processor the Moto E feels sprightlier. That’s the only hiccup in our minds in the smartphone to beat in the entry-level segment. Once again, Xiaomi has managed to make much of the competition irrelevant with its cunning pricing strategy. Read our complete Xiaomi Redmi 1s review to know more.

Micromax Android One  – Rs 6,499
v
The best from Micromax, so far
We think the Micromax Canvas A1 is the best smartphone made by the company. It is dwarfed by the specs of the Canvas Knight or the Canvas Nitro, but is actually a way better overall experience in terms of usability, stability, and longevity. In fact, it looks way more expensive and sophisticated than its price suggests. It’s also great value thanks to the price, while the promised updates from Google are the cherry on top. The only drawbacks are the camera, which is not terrible, but could be better. It comes with stock Android and also promises the upcoming and latest Android L update. If you are looking at the budget category then the Canvas A1 is worth a look before taking the plunge. Read our Canvas A1 review, to know more.

Lava Iris X1 – Rs 7,999
Sturdy construction and good looks are only some of the pros of the X1
Sturdy construction and good looks are only some of the pros of the X1
If you want a well built and good looking phone with better features than the Moto E, then the X1 is good option. For a thousand bucks more, the Lava Iris X1 does offer a lot more features to warrant this bump in price. It has a bigger display, a front facing camera and a much better rear camera with dual LED flash. In terms of hardware, the X1 and the Moto E are more or less on par, despite the latter only having a dual-core CPU. However, in terms of user experience, the X1 is still no match for the Moto E. Even though both phones run stock Android KitKat with 1GB RAM, the X1 lags quite a bit in day to day operations. Read our Lava Iris x1 review.

Asus Zenfone 4- Rs 6,999
Asus Zenfone 4
The youngest in the Asus Zenfone clan

Lastly, we’ve picked the youngest in the Zenfone family – the 4-inch Zenfone 4. We are still in the process of reviewing the device, but so far, it seems a good deal under Rs 10,000. The smartphone sports a good design and user interface. It is pretty smooth for basic phone usage and could also take on a few heavy games. Staying true to standard budget-smartphone specifications, the 4-inch model features a 5MP average camera, but the front-camera is not a good fit for selfies. Watch the space for our complete review of the Zenfone 4.

Besides, Xiaomi is also expected to launch the Redmi Note soon, a 5.5-inch 720p phablet, for just under Rs 10,000. Some of its other features include  1.7GHz MediaTek MT6592 octa-core processor, 1.7GB of RAM, 8GB onboard storage, microSD card slot up to 32GB, 3MP rear camera, 5MP front shooter for selfies and 3100mAh battery.

Google Nexus 6 aka Nexus X smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet launched 15/10/2014

Google likely to announce Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet today

If the chatter online is to be believed then Google will be launching its new Nexus 6 aka Nexus X smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet today. This piece of news doesn’t come as a surprise as it is line with previous reports about mid-October launch. Now, Google has confirmed to Forbes that both

Nexus devices will be announced via a blogpost, and made available over the coming weeks. The report further suggests that the Nexus 9 will be the first device to run Android L.
The tablet codenamed Volantis will be available for pre-order starting October 17  and will begin shipping on November 3. However, there is no word on when Android L will be rolled out for other devices. It will be available in 16GB and 32GB LTE version (with expandable memory slots) priced at $399 and $499, respectively.

In the past couple of months, there have been consistent rumours about Google planning to ‘quietly’ launch the Motorola-built Nexus X aka Nexus 6 in mid-October. The search giant is also believed to launch Android L on November 1. Moreover, the Nexus 6 is likely to be named Nexus X due to some copyright issues. In terms of specs, one can expect a massive 5.92 inch display with a QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. This comes out to be 498 ppi, which is quite impressive for a smartphone.

There’s also going to be a 13MP camera, which will be able to capture 4K UHD video. For video calls and self-shots, Motorola will pack a 2MP camera on the front. The surprises don’t end there. On the internals, the device could have a Snapdragon 805 processor and may pack 3GB of RAM. You can also expect the device to be available in 32GB, in addition to other storage versions. All this will be powered by a 3,200 mAh battery.

Rumours about the HTC-built Nexus 9 have also been taking rounds for months now. The Nexus 9 is almost confirmed to feature a Nvidia Tegra K1 processor that comes with 64-bit support. And with Android L running the show, it will be able to make full use of the architecture. Some of the leaked reports claim that the Nexus 9 could sport an 8.9-inch display with a resolution of 2048 x 1440 pixels. It’s also expected to come with 2GB RAM, 16 and 32GB storage options, an 8MP OIS main camera and a souped-up 3MP front facing camera.

How to Root an Android Device?

How to root Android devices? There are many methods available to root different mobile phones and tablets but in this topic, I'm going to list 4 easiest, fastest and 1-click methods to root almost all Android devices and Android OS versions.
METHOD 1: Root Using Kingo Root Program
Its a free and easy to use program to root any Android device. I have tried it to root Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4 mobile phones and it worked without any problem.
1. First of all download the software using following link:
Download Kingo Android Root
2. After installing the program, launch it and connect your Android device to your PC.

Google Nexus 360 wearable smartphone

“The Google Nexus 360 may look straight out of a sci-fi movie, but is possible with the tech available today, and just needs a manufacturer willing to take the plunge”
Nexus 360 profile
Although many might think that concept phones are just creative visualisations that are made to wow audiences, they still define a path to the future, no matter how difficult or impractical it may be. Not all concept phone ideas are achievable, and most of them stray away from reality significantly. After coming up with several popular concept smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S5, Nexus 6, and the Apple iPhone 6 at 91mobiles, we've always striven to offer a concept which is a reflection of what can really be expected in the time to come, and not just some far-fetched futuristic idea that might or might not become a reality ever. Keeping this is mind, we present to you the Nexus 360 concept, a smartphone that aims at offering functionality above all, while keeping its feet planted firmly in reality by being viable using components and materials already available.
Nexus 360 on wrist
Smartphones are omnipresent, and there is a growing demand for wearable accessories such as smartwatches. Combining the two entirely different devices and form factors into one is what the Nexus 360 all about. The device offers the functionality of a full-fledged smartphone while being capable of transforming into a wearable – something that can be easily worn on the wrist much like a smartwatch.

With the flood of mobile computing devices, more and more users prefer carrying a single device that can take on multiple roles and adapt as per needs. The popularity of phablets is a good example. Yet another usability issue is that shooting impromptu and share-worthy images using their smartphones is still a hassle for many. It’s said that the best camera is the one with you, but one on your wrist could be even better. Next, wearable technology is evolving rapidly, but compelling devices that appeal to the masses are few and far between. Health monitoring is a key aspect of wearables but the approach is still very fragmented since it requires the use of accessories that can’t be used standalone. Their use is dependent upon paired smartphones and companion apps for setting up, capturing data and analysing it. The same issues plague smartwatches too. The idea then, is to come up with a single device that can tackle all these issues in one shot.
Nexus 360
With the Google Nexus 360, 91mobiles is attempting to combine a full-fledged smartphone that transforms into a feature-rich smartwatch, without compromising on any aspect when it comes to usage. For this purpose, the 91mobiles team factored in user suggestions, and studied various prototypes and innovative technologies that are already in existence, so that an actual end-user product can be made available in the near future.
We chose the Google brand for this concept since the search titan has always been at the forefront of innovation, and isn't tied to a specific hardware manufacturer. The Nexus brand is related to the purest Android experience, and the Nexus 360 concept utilises the same platform. Google is most likely to push technological advances, and make its platform and search services ubiquitous.
Nexus 360 wristband mode
The Nexus 360 concept is based on a design that allows the device to be bent like a wristband on demand, but that does not take away any of the functionality. To achieve this, the device has been imagined to be manufactured with materials that are both bendable as well as resilient to scratches. Additionally, using polymers has its own advantage and allows the device to be made lightweight and at the same time, imparts water- and dust-proof qualities as well.
Similar material has been developed by Dai-Nippon Printing, which can be used even today for the construction of bendable device much like the LG G Flex, only more flexible. Taking this a step further, the Nexus 360 can be bent completely to fit the user’s wrist. At the back of the device, there are retractable straps that emerge when it is flexed for the watch mode. The flexible straps tighten based on wrist size, allowing the device to be worn by anyone and everyone comfortably.
Nexus 360 front and back
Combining the benefits of a smartwatch and a fitness tracker in one, the Nexus 360 features an integrated heart rate monitor at the back. Users can monitor their health on the fly, and since the smartphone itself is on their wrists, they no longer need to carry additional devices.
Nexus 360 headset and aux display
The display on the Nexus 360 is a 5-inch Polymer OLED-based unit featuring full HD resolution. Polymer OLED displays are manufactured without the use of glass, and that allows them to be bent, giving them the flexibility required. The Nexus 360 also features a secondary OLED display on the right, offering ready access to notifications and alerts, eliminating the need to power up the main display and therefore enhancing battery life.
Nexus 360 bluetoothheadset
On the other side, there is a detachable Bluetooth headset that can be used for communications while the device is in watch mode. The Bluetooth headset also utilises a flexible design, and has a bendable ear hook which allows it to be worn more comfortably by the user. When not in use, it can be straightened out and docked inside the cavity, both for storage as well as for recharging.
As for the innards, the Nexus 360 runs on a quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz for smooth performance. Along with it, there is a healthy 3GB of RAM for multitasking and the device comes in different storage variants – 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. Unfortunately, the visualised design doesn't allow for a microSD card slot.
Nexus 360 shapeshift
In terms of connectivity, Nexus 360 features single-SIM GSM connectivity with support for 4G/LTE networks. For wireless connectivity, there is Bluetooth 4.0 and dual-band Wi-Fi along with NFC for easy and seamless connectivity with compatible accessories and devices. In addition to this, the home button also doubles up as a biometric fingerprint scanner and allows the users to gain access to the device with just a single swipe of their thumbs. Users can also carry out financial transactions on compatible online stores.
Nexus 360 camera
The 16-megapixel camera on the device comes in the form of a rotating tube encasing all the components like the camera module, flash and the autofocus assist light as well. The tube design allows the camera to be rotated to face the front, both for video calling and for capturing high-definition selfies . Additionally, the rotating camera also allows the angles to be adjusted according to the user’s convenience when the device is being used in the wristband mode. There's support for 4K video recording as well.
This design is an amalgamation of several successful smartphones and technologies that prevail today and takes their use to the next level. The Google Nexus 360 concept device holds relevance to smartphone users, enthusiasts, device designers, device makers, and design Institutions as well as global smartphone brands. We'd like to reiterate that the device is just a creative visualisation, and has been designed to define a way ahead for designers and manufacturers who can draw inspiration from it to offer something that's truly path-breaking, yet highly usable.

BlackBerry and Porsche, which have a history of working together on special edition devices, have collaborated to launch a new smartphone running BlackBerry 10.3. In true luxury smartphone tradition, the device gets a rather long (but posh) moniker – the Porsche Design P’9983 from BlackBerry.

As expected, the phone is crafted from premium materials, including a sapphire glass camera lens, a forged stainless steel chassis and floating Porche Design logo, and a glass weave material for the back panel.

Sporting the classic BlackBerry QWERTY keyboard, the P’9983 gets “glass-like” keys with silver font characters. BlackBerry says the keyboard is made of a durable synthetic material, designed to withstand wear and tear.

Coming to the core specs, the P’9983 features a 3.1-inch square touchscreen display, with a resolution of 720 x 720 pixels. It’s powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 processor, coupled with 2GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There’s a microSD card slot for expansion up to 128GB, USB 2.0 for charging and data transfers, and micro-HDMI for hooking up your smartphone to projector or an external screen such as a television or monitor. Handling the photography is an 8-megapixel primary camera with flash, and a 2MP front camera. There’s a 2,100mAh battery to fuel the phone, which reportedly offers 14 hours of talktime on 3G, and up to 8.1 hours of video playback. Connectivity options include LTE/3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, GPS and NFC.
BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9983 (1)
Coming to the software, the smartphone comes loaded with the usual BlackBerry 10 features, including word prediction and auto-correction for the keyboard, encrypted BBM instant messaging, and the BlackBerry Priority Hub to display important messages and notifications. For those of you who like to make a statement, you might be pleased to know that the regular BlackBerry pin has been replaced by an exclusive Porsche Design PIN range – 2AAXXXXX. For apps and games, you’ll have access to BlackBerry World, as well as a large selection of Android apps, thanks to BlackBerry's partnership with the Amazon Appstore.

In the retail box, BlackBerry is including a premium stereo headset, an international charging kit, a polishing cloth to keep your phone nice and shiny, and a USB cable. You can also customise your device with a range of handcrafted Italian leather back covers in colours like Yellow, Blue Green, Dark Brown, Pomegranate, Paloma Grey, Salsa, Blue and Orange.

The P’9983 will be available from Porsche Design stores and select retailers around the world by the beginning of October. The price hasn't been announced yet, but don’t expect to pay anything less than a bomb.

Sailfish OS-powered Jolla phone coming to India on September 23rd

“The Sailfish OS marks a stark difference from current mobile platforms like Android and iOS”
Jolla – a Finland-based company was supposed to enter the Indian market in the month of August with its smartphone offering. However, that never happened. But as they say, better late than never. The brand has just announced that it will be launching its Jolla phone exclusively via Snapdeal on September 23rd.
Jolla phone launch India on Sept 23
In terms of the hardware, the device offers mid-range specs with a 4.5-inch display as its centerpiece. The display bears a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels (~245ppi), and protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 2. Inside lies a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip with four cores running at 1.4GHz. Mated with a gigabyte of RAM, the smartphone should offer smooth performance. Storage-wise, the phone offers 16GB in-built memory, that can be further extended via a microSD card of up to 64GB capacity.

Though the handset is sold in black, you can buy various rear panels available in other shades like red and yellow. For photography, the device sports an 8-megapixel camera at the back which is supplemented by an LED flash, and a 2MP front-facing snapper. The Jolla phone draws power from a 2,100mAh Li-ion battery. For connectivity, the device offers the usual options like 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

While the hardware of the phone may not be mind-blowing, its software layer is quite interesting as it marks a stark difference from current mobile operating systems like Android and iOS. The Sailfish OS is based on Linux and relies heavily on gestures... so much so that the device is devoid of any kind of navigation buttons.

Sadly, one thing which isn’t known yet is the pricing. That’ll decide whether Jolla’s offering can stand out in the competitive market or not. We’ll get to know about its price tag soon, so stay tuned to our blog.
